This phenomenon can be explained as follows. In Figure A, we see as eye viewing two objects at different distances. As the eye moves sideways, the distance which the images of the two objects travel across the retina are not the same. The image cast by Object B travels longer distance than that cast by Object A, which makes Object B, the nearer object, appear to move faster. A similar phenomenon occurs whenthe eye was still, and objects moved across the line of sight at equal speed as in Figure B. The image of Object D would travel further and faster across the retina than the image of Object C.
